এই সবকিছুই শুরু হয়েছিল ওই আইসক্রিম বিক্রেতা মি. পেপির জন্য। তার একটি ঠেলাগাড়ি ছিল যেটি সে স্কুলের বাইরে দাঁড় করিয়ে রাখত। সে যেসব আইসক্রিম বিক্রি করত তার সবগুলিই ছিল আলাদা আলাদা ধরনের। তার কাছে সমস্ত স্বাদ ও গন্ধের আইসক্রিম ছিল। সে আমাকে খুব একটা পছন্দ করত না। সে একবার আমাকে বলেছিল, “তুমি ভাব তুমি খুব চালাকচতুর। একদিন তুমি অতিরিক্ত চালাকচতুর হয়ে যাবে।”
আমি শুধু হাসলাম এবং হেঁটে চলে গেলাম। আমি জানতাম ও কিছু করবে না। লোকটি ছিল খুবই নরম মনের যেসব বাচ্চার কাছে পয়সা থাকত না তাদের সে সবসময় বিনা পয়সায় আইসক্রিম দিত। গরিব মানুষদের জন্য সে দুঃখ পেত।

Hare could not make up the distance and the tortoise won.

One day I found an ice cream peddler going down the road. I could see him from my house. Probably he had already sold all his ice creams. I started to wonder what he would do at home. Probably, he would wash his van and place it somewhere. In the evening, he would prepare ice creams for the next day’s sale. Would he eat some ice cream himself? I thought how lucky he was, having so much ice cream of his own!
