সে দেখল এক অদ্ভুত চেহারা পাথরগুলি বেয়ে ধীরে ধীরে উঠে আসছে। সে পিঠে করে ভারী কিছু বয়ে নিয়ে আসছে। আরও কাছে এসে, রিপ ছোটোখাটো চেহারার, ঘন ঝাঁকড়া চুল এবং দাড়ি রয়েছে এমন একজন বৃদ্ধ লোককে দেখল | সে রিপকে তার বোঝা বওয়ায় সাহায্য করার জন্য ইশারা করল। রিপ সবসময়েই অন্যকে সাহায্য করে থাকে, এবারেও তাই করল।
তারা গাছপালায় ঘেরা একটি গোল ফাঁকা জায়গায় এল। মাঝখানে এক সমতল জায়গায় সে দেখল অস্বাভাবিক একদল লোক নাইনপিন খেলছে। তাদেরকে দেখতে কিম্ভূতকিমাকার। একজনের বিশাল মাথা, চওড়া মুখ এবং শুয়োরের মতো ছোটো ছোটো চোখ। আর একজনের মুখ দেখে মনে হল মখের পুরোটা জুড়েই নাক রয়েছে তাদের প্রত্যেকের বিভিন্ন আকারের ও রঙের দাড়ি ছিল। তারা নিজেদের মধ্যে আনন্দ করছিল কিন্তু সবাই চুপচাপ ছিল। তারা মূর্তির মতো স্থির দৃষ্টিতে রিপের দিকে তাকিয়েছিল। তার সঙ্গী, মনে হল, পিঠে করে এক ছোটো পিপেতে কিছু একটা তরল জিনিস বয়ে আনছিল। সেই পিপেটি নামানো হল এবং প্রত্যেকে সেই পাত্রটি থেকে পান করল। রিপ প্রথমে ভয় পেয়ে গিয়েছিল | কিছুক্ষণ পরে, তার ভয় কমে গেল।তৃস্নার্ত বোধ করায়, সে নিজেও অনেকবার পান করল| ধীরে ধীরে তার চোখ বুজে এল। সে গভীর ঘুমে আচ্ছন্ন হয়ে পড়ল।
ঘুম ভেঙে সে নিজেকে দেখতে পেল ওই উঁচু পাহাড়ের ওপরে, যেখানে সে প্রথম বৃদ্ধ মানুষটিকে দেখেছিল। সেটা ছিল এক উজ্জ্বল রোদ ঝলমলে সকাল | ঝোপঝাড়ের মধ্যে পাখিরা কিচিরমিচির করছিল। “নিশ্চয়ই,” রিপ ভাবল, “আমি এখানে সারারাত্রি ঘুমাইনি!” সে উল্ফের জন্য শিস দিল, কিন্তু কোনো কুকুরকে দেখা গেল না। সে স্থির করল গত সন্ধের ঘটনাস্থলটি একবার ঘুরে আসবে। যখন সে ওই জায়গায় পৌঁছোল, সে দেখে অবাক হল যে এখন ওখান দিয়ে একটি পাহাড়ি নদী বয়ে চলেছে! কী করা যেতে পারে? বেলা বয়ে যাচ্ছে, আর হতভাগ্য রিপের প্রচণ্ড খিদেও পেয়েছে | মাথা ঝাঁকিয়ে সে তার বাড়ির দিকে চলল।

রিপের চেহারা, তার ওই লম্বা দাড়ি এবং অদ্ভুত পোশাক, শীঘ্রই লোকেদের মনোযোগ আকর্ষণ করল। রিপ তাদেরকে বলল যে সে কোনো ক্ষতি করতে আসেনি, কেবল নিজের বন্ধুদের এবং পরিজনদের খোঁজ করতে এসেছে। সে নিকোলাস ভেডারের ব্যাপারে জিজ্ঞেস করল। কিছুক্ষণের জন্য সবাই নীরব হয়ে গেল। তারপরে একজন বৃদ্ধ লোক উত্তর দিলেন, “নিকোলাস ভেডার? সে তো চলে গেছে, মারা গেছে আঠারো বছর আগে!”

Once we four friends decided to visit a nearby forest. We went farthest into the forest. The evening was falling very soon. We were very tired and thirsty. As, we saw a house nearby. We decided to stay the night there. We slept in separate rooms. But when I woke up in the morning, I found my friends were all gone. I was terribly frightened. I got very angry at them. But I knew I have to return home soon. So, without wasting any time, I returned home through the same path which we had taken before while coming.
