Nouns for Class 4 with Types

Noun is a naming word”. A noun is used to denote the name of something by a word whatever we see, touch, or feel.

Examples:

(a) Amartya is a good boy.

(b) The dog is a faithful animal.

(c) The army reached there in time.

(d) Iron is a very useful metal.

(e) Kindness is a great virtue.

In the above sentences, Amartya (name of a person), animal (name of a group of animals), army (name of a group of people), Iron (name of a thing or substance), and kindness (name of a group) stand for Noun.

Nouns can be divided into five parts on the basis of sight, touch, and feeling.

1. Proper Noun 

The name of a particular person, place, river, day, or thing is called a Proper Noun.

Examples:

(a) Anu is a good student.

(b) Kolkata is a big city.

(c) The Koran is a holy book.

(d) He reads The Telegraph daily. 

★ Since Proper Noun denotes the name of a specific object, place, person, famous palace, newspaper, etc., the first letter of these proper names will always be a capital letter.

2. Common Noun 

The word by which we understand the common name of a class or nation is called a Common Noun. There is always an article in front of a common noun.

Common Noun, like Proper Noun, does not name any particular person, thing, animal, or place, rather it refers to all the people, things, animals, or places in general.

Examples:

(a) A river is flowing.

(b) A cow is running.

(c) A pen is on the table.

(d) A train is coming.

(e) A bird is flying.

3. Material Noun

An object is made of a special material, and the names of that element or substance are Material Noun

Example: ‘Chair’ is a Common Noun but ‘wood’ is a Material Noun. ‘ring’ is a Common Noun but ‘gold’ is a Material Noun

Examples:

(a) Iron is a useful metal.

(b) A diamond is a bright thing.

(c) Water is life.

★ Material Nouns cannot be counted.

★ It depends on quantity.

★ It is always counted as singular.

★ There was no article before this.

But an Article is used to explain a specific meaning. For example, The gold of this ring is pure.

4. Collective Noun

All those nouns that denote a collection of a number of people, objects, or things are called Collective Nouns.

Examples:

Army, Bunch, Pack, and Fleet are Collective Nouns.

Army = A collection of soldiers,

Bunch =  A collection of keys or grapes 

Pack =  A collection of dogs.
