Simple Past Tense Class 4 Rules

We use the simple past tense to talk about the things that happened in the past and are now over.

Ali was the captain of the football team last year.

The thieves were arrested by the police.

Forming the simple past tense of the link verb ‘be’

1. We use was with singular nouns and pronouns he, she and it.

●My mother was angry with me.

●He was in the market.

●The cat was hurt. It was in pain.

2. We use were with plural nouns and the pronouns you, we and they.

●The children were in the park.

●You were ill last week.

Regular verbs

We form the past tense of regular verbs by adding -d or -ed to the base verb.

Adding-ed to the base verb

help – helped

listen – listened

play –  played

talk  –  talked

walk –  walked

Adding -d to the base verb

save – saved

close – closed

dance – danced

1. For verbs ending in a consonant + y, we remove the y and add-ied.

carry  – carried

try – tried

2. For verbs ending in a vowel and a consonant, we double the consonant and add -ed.

Irregular verbs

The simple past forms of irregular verbs do not end in -ed.

With some irregular verbs, the forms of the simple past are different from the base verb.

Negatives in the past tense

We use did not (or didn’t in speech) to make negatives.

I did not go to the park on Sunday.

Questions in the past tense

We use did + the base form of the verb to make questions.
