মহান সম্রাট আকবর যিনি সারা ভারতবর্ষের শাসন করেছিলেন, তিনি ছিলেন সঙ্গীত সাহিত্য বিজ্ঞান এবং কলার পৃষ্ঠপোষক।একদিন সুন্দর এক সকালে তিনি তার বিশাল বড় সুন্দর বাগানের পায়চারি করছিলেন। তার বাগানের মধ্যে সারিবদ্ধ ভাবে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল সেই গাছগুলি যে গাছগুলিতে ফলত সবথেকে সুস্বাদু এবং রসালো ফল গুলি সারা রাজ্যের মধ্যে। তার বাগানের মধ্যে বিভিন্ন আকার ও আকৃতির ফুলের গাছ ছিল। তার সঙ্গে ছিল তার সবচাইতে প্রিয় এবং বিশ্বস্ত মন্ত্রী বীরবল। কিন্তু সেই মহান সম্রাট আকবরের মনের মধ্যে কোন শান্তি ছিল না যে গুণ ব্যতীত কেউ কখনই এমনকি রাজা ও যেকোনো সৌন্দর্যের প্রশংসা করতে পারে না।

জ্ঞানী বীরবল এটা লক্ষ্য করলো এবং আকবর কে জিজ্ঞাসা করল , “ও মহামান্য শক্তিশালী রাজা আপনার মনের মধ্যে কি সমস্যা চলছে? আপনাকে আজকে আপনার স্বভাবসিদ্ধ ভঙ্গিমায় দেখতে পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না, কারণ আমার রাজা তো কখনো এই পৃথিবীর দেখা সবচাইতে সুন্দরতম রাজ্যের সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করতে ব্যর্থ হয় না।

আকবর উত্তর দিলেন, “বীরবল, আমার প্রিয় , বন্ধু তুমি ঠিকই বলেছ।প্রকৃতপক্ষে একটা ধাঁধা যেটা আমার মধ্যে সমস্যা সৃষ্টি করে চলছে। একটা অলস ভাবনা যেটা আমার মনের মধ্যে দিয়ে ঘোরাফেরা করছে সেই অলস ভাবনাটাই হচ্ছে আমার এই চিন্তার কারণ। আমি সমস্যাজর্জরিত কারণ আমি একটা প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজে পাচ্ছি না। একটা সহজতম প্রশ্ন – এই গ্রহের সবথেকে দ্রুততম বস্তু কি?”

তখন বীরবল বলল, “এই সমস্যা মহারাজ? আপনি আপনার প্রত্যেক সভাসদদের সভায় ডাকুন। দেখি তাদের মধ্যে কেউ এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে পারে কিনা।যদি তারা এর উত্তর দিতে না পারে আমি নিশ্চিত যে আমি আপনাকে বলে দেব এই গ্রহের সবথেকে দ্রুততম বস্তু কি।“

রাজার সভায় প্রত্যেকে এই প্রশ্নের শুনলো যে প্রশ্নটা আকবর কে সমস্যায় ফেলছিল। বেশিরভাগ সবাই হতভম্ব হয়ে গেল। কেউ কেউ বলল,” গরুর গাড়ি”, আবার কেউ বলল,” ঘোড়া”।কিন্তু বীরবল শুধুমাত্র তাদের দিকে তাকিয়ে তাকিয়ে হাসল আর কিছুই বলল না।

প্রত্যেকে যখন সম্রাট আকবর কে এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিয়ে সন্তুষ্ট করতে ব্যর্থ হলো, তখন বীরবল এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেওয়ার জন্য এগিয়ে এলো। বিরবাল বলল,” মহামান্য সম্রাট এর উত্তরটা হলো মানুষের মন!” এটা প্রমাণ করবার জন্য, বীরবল বলে চলল,”আপনি আপনার রাজ্যের যে-কোনো লোককে আমার সামনে যে কোন একটি সমস্যা উপস্থাপন করতে বলুন।আমি দেখিয়ে দেবো কিভাবে দ্রুততার সঙ্গে আমি আমার মনের ক্ষমতা প্রয়োগ করে এই সমস্যার সমাধান করে দিতে পারি।“

একজন মানুষ ওই শ্রোতাদের মধ্যে থেকে এগিয়ে এলো। সে দাবি করলেও দেয় যে তার প্রতিবেশী তাকে একটি কোন বিক্রি করেছে। এখন যখন সে ঐ কোন থেকে জল তুলতে যাচ্ছে তার প্রতিবেশী সেই জলের জন্য তার কাছ থেকে টাকা চাইছে। সভায় সেই প্রতিবেশীকে ডাকার পরে,সেই প্রতিবেশি যুক্তি দিয়ে বলল যে সে তাকে শুধুমাত্র কুঁয়ো বিক্রি করেছে কুঁয়র ভিতরে যে জল সেই জল বিক্রির করেনি।

আকবর সেই প্রতিবেশীর দেওয়ার যুক্তিটি মনোযোগ সহকারে শুনুন এবং বীরবল কে বলল এই বিতর্কটি সমাধান করে দিতে। বীরবল হাসলো সেই লোকটির দিকে তাকিয়ে এবং বলল,”আমার মনে হয় এর সমস্যার সমাধান টি খুবই সহজ। এটা আপনার কোন এখন, আপনার প্রতিবেশী কে আপনাকে ভাড়া দিতে হবে তার ওই জল আপনার পুরো মধ্যে রাখবার জন্য। যদি কোমর জল ব্যবহার করবার জন্য আপনাকে আপনার প্রতিবেশী কে টাকা দিতে হয় তাহলে আপনার প্রতিবেশী কেউ সেই কুঁয়্যা জলর আপনার পৌঁছে রাখবার জন্য ভাড়া দিতে হবে।“
