Rules of Narration Change Class 5
Rule 1
The words of the speaker are not enclosed within quotation marks. For example,
- Direct Speech: Ben said, ‘I am happy.’
- Indirect Speech: Ben said that he was happy.
Rule 2
The conjunction that is usually used between reporting verb and reported speech in indirect speech. For example,
- Direct Speech: Rahman said, ‘I love music.’
- Indirect Speech: Rahman said that he loved music.

Rule 3
The pronouns and the possessive adjectives also change according to the subject or object of the sentence in direct speech. For example,
Direct Speech: She said, ‘I don’t like tea.’
Indirect Speech: She said that she didn’t like tea.
Direct Speech: Mark said, ‘I am going to meet my mother.’
Indirect Speech: Mark said that he was going to meet his mother.
Direct Speech: I said, ‘I spoke to them.’
Indirect Speech: I said that I had spoken to them.
Direct Speech: She said, ‘You must be careful.”
Indirect Speech: She asked me to be careful.
Direct Speech: Mamta said, ‘I have forgotten your name.’

Rule 4
As the actual words of the speaker were spoken in the past, narrating it in the present needs a change in the tense. For example,
Direct Speech: Gaurav said, ‘I like chocolate ice cream.’
Indirect Speech: Gaurav said that he liked chocolate ice cream.
Direct Speech: Prateek said, ‘I am playing cricket.’
Indirect Speech: Prateek said that he was playing cricket.

Time expression changes when direct to indirect speech is reported.

If demonstrative pronouns and the adverb here are mentioned in direct speech, they will change in indirect speech.
