Example: Present Perfect Continuous Tense Class 5 English Grammar

Example:

  • She has been skipping for two hours.
  • Virat has been lifting weights.
  • He has been running around the stadium for half an hour.
  • It has been raining since morning.

All the above-highlighted words refer to actions that started sometime in the past and are still continuing or have just finished.

When the verbs of the sentences are used to express an action that began in the past, is in progress at the time of speaking, and will continue for some time in the future or has just ended, they are in the Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

Formula: Subject + has/have + been + Verb + ing + Object.

Wh-Word Question

Formula: Wh-Word + Have / Has + Subject + been + Verb + ing + Object?

  • What have they been watching for an hour?

Questions for information are made with the ‘Wh-word’who, which, what, why, whose, whom, how are called ‘Wh-word’.

Present Perfect Continuous (Negative-Interrogative)

Formula: Have / Has + Subject + not + been + Verb + ing + Object?

In the Negative-Interrogative sentence ‘not’ is placed before the subject noun and after the subject pronoun.

Present perfect continuous tense is used

1. to express an action that has started in the past and is still continuing.

Example:

  • Virat Kholi has been batting for two hours.
  • He has been working since morning.

2. For is used to denote the period of time i.e. duration or span of time.

Example:

  • The old man has been suffering for two days.
  • He has been reading for three hours.

3. Since is used to denote a point of time i.e beginning of a certain time but has no end.

Example:

  • He has been reading since 7 o’clock in the morning.
  • Rohit Sharma has been batting since lunch.
