The indefinite articles are used

a. before singular countable nouns.

For example,

a table, a pen, a bottle, a book, a politician, a committee, a school, a wish, an egg, an umbrella, an ox, an ant.

b. before a singular countable noun that is being referred to for the first time.

For example,

(i) Would you like to read a book?

(ii) He has got a job.

(iii) Would you like to have an orange?

3. before names of jobs. 

For example,

(i) He works as a waiter.

(ii) She wants to become an engineer.

4. with nationalities and religions. 

For example,

(i) Pierce is an American.

(ii) Kathy is a Christian.

5. with singular nouns after the words what and such. 

For example,

(i) What a beautiful day!

(ii) What a lovely beach!

6. while referring to a single unit of measurement of time, weight and distance.

For example,

(i) She can run a kilometre in five minutes.

(ii) I have to buy a kilogram of sugar.

B. Exception Rules to Use Indefinite Articles: An 

1. An is used before a silent h

For example,

  • He is an honest man.
  • We waited for an hour.

2. An is used before a word that begins with a consonant but has a vowel sound.

For example,

  • He works in an MNC.
  • She is an MLA.

3. A is used before a word that begins with a vowel but has a consonant sound.

For example,

  • He is a European.
  • The serial has a universal appeal.

The article the is called a definite article because it refers to a specific person or thing. The word, “the” is the definite article used before nouns to refer to a specific or particular thing or person.

The definite article is used

1. while speaking of a particular person or thing that has already been referred to.

For example,

(i) I returned the book I had borrowed from my teacher.

(ii) The girl in the red salwar is the Principal’s daughter.

(iii) The shop you spoke about was shut for the day.

2. before proper nouns like the names of rivers, seas, oceans, and mountain ranges.

For example, 

the Amazon, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Alps.

3. before names of newspapers and holy books. 

For example

the Bible, the Vedas, and the Times of India.

4. before names of famous buildings, works of art, and monuments. 

For example,

5. when a singular noun is used to represent a whole class or group

For example,

(i) The elephant is a massive creature.

(ii) The neem tree is a very useful tree.

6. with superlatives and ordinal numbers.

7. to refer to people or objects that are unique.

Omission of Articles

We do not use articles

1. before names of people and cities.
